There is a video at the bottom of this article, so if you don’t like reading words you can skip down and just watch the video.

How often do find yourself reminiscing about the past? What about the future? Do you often find yourself worrying about how your life might turn out?

This is a waste of energy. Why? Because the past and future do not exist.

All you ever have is this moment right now.

Of course, time moves steadily forwards, and things constantly change. You slowly get older, and so do the people around you. Fashions come and go, new technologies get invented, and you feel nostalgic for some vague point in your past when you were younger and life was a continuous blur of endless happy days full of smiles and laughter.

The thing is, all this is in your mind. None of it actually exists outside your mind. Every time you think about the past or worry about the future, they are merely thoughts that you are experiencing NOW.

Even if you could somehow fully plan your perfect future in 10 years time, you will not fully appreciate it once it arrives, because by then it will be the present moment, and your mind will be in the habit of ignoring the present moment in favour of worrying about some other imaginary future a further 10 years ahead.

The only time life actually happens is NOW.

And whatever Now contains is always changing. Nothing stays the same.

Of course, there is nothing wrong with learning lessons from past mistakes, as long as you don’t keep going over them endlessly and missing out on your current life. There is also nothing wrong with making plans for the future, as long as you don’t sacrifice the present moment in order to do so. Be fully present in the process of planning, and know that nothing is ever set in stone.
